Open Events of MIAW 2023!

We are happy to invite you to the open events of MIAW 2023!

Within the framework of annual Milano Arch Week AUIC School in collaboration with Triennale Milano has organized on 9th June a morning of five Speed Talks with guest professors of MIAW 2023. The conference will be a sequence of presentations during which professors will speak about their work and about ideas related to the topic of the workshop.

The final important event of MIAW 2023 will be the exhibition with the projects of five ateliers, the opening of which will take place on 16th of June in AUIC school. It will be open till 30th of June.

We are looking forward to see you all on our open events!

HELDER CASAL RIBEIRO

Helder Casal Ribeiro is a Portuguese architect graduated from FAUP in 1992. In the same institution he has obtained also his Ph.D. in Architecture in 2013. Since 1999 he lectures in Design Studio of FAUP and is currently an auxiliary professor and head professor of 1st year Design Studio in Master Course. In the Ph.D Program in Architecture, co-headed courses, with participation of Monique Eleb, Cármen Espegel and Txato Sabater and coordinated FAUP´s Open Courses “100 years of housing” and “Dwelling in Europe”. Since 2020 he is a professor in
“Project Thesis Seminar”, option “Housing Project and Ways of Inhabiting”. Helder Casal Ribeiro is also a visiting professor at Politecnico di Milano in Mantova campus and in ABC Ph.D programme of Leonardo Campus. He develops professional activity since 1992. Has received National Award IHRU 2008_Construction for Social Housing Project in Porto.
Founder of “Fpoetics®_laboratorial hub”, and co-founder of curatorial collective “MATTER. The white conferences”. He is a researcher at CEAU in group “Atlas da Casa” with “Multi-family Dwelling: Theory, Design, Didactics” and
“Transference and Identity” projects, where currently researches the modern condition and its reflexes in the contemporary architectural scene. Currently associated to the research project “SIZA baroque”, funded by public agency that supports scientific research in Portugal (FCT).

FILIPE MAGALHÃES

Filipe Magalhães (Porto, 1987) graduated in architecture at Faculdade de Arquitectura do Porto. He collaborated with Harry Gugger in Basel and Sanaa in Tokyo. Filipe co-founded Fala in 2013 and is currently a phd researcher at FAUP.
Besides his current teaching positions in Lisbon and Milan, Filipe is regularly invited as a teacher, guest critic and lecturer to various international schools and institutions. Fala’s work has been exhibited and published widely in biennials, single and collective exhibitions and printed media.

EDUARDO PESQUERA GONZÁLEZ

Born in Santander(Spain), Eduardo Pesquera González from an early age was determined to become an architect because of his interest in technique and his desire for organization. He moved to the capital in the 80’s to study at the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

After finishing his studies in 1989, he began to collaborate with well-known architectural offices, and in parallel started his own professional studio in Madrid.

In 1994 he obtained the Architecture Scholarship through a public competition for a one-year stay at the Spanish Academy in Rome, which marked the start of his doctoral research on the contemporary operability of the design mechanisms of architecture from the past.

Upon his return from Rome, he obtained the position as Associate Professor of Architectural Projects at the School of Architecture of Madrid, a teaching activity that he combines -as it could not be otherwise in this discipline- with his own office, currently in Cantabria, Madrid and Mexico City. The work of his studio has been awarded prizes on more than 50 occasions, disseminated in exhibitions, magazines and books of international prestige. A work of varied programs with a common denominator: the resolution of issues intervening on complex systems, acting on most occasions in the purposeful update on architectures of the past.

ANTJE FREIESLEBEN

Antje Freiesleben born in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, studied architecture at Hochschule der Künste of Berlin from 1985 to 1993. In 1994 with Johannes Modersohn she founded the Modersohn & Freiesleben studio. Since 1995 she has been a member of the Chamber of Architects of Berlin and from 1998 to 2004 collaborated with the Department of Urban Planning and Design of UDK. She has been an invited professor in various prominent institutions such as the Bauhaus University in Weimar and University of Siegen.

PAOLO CASCONE

Born in Italy and growing up between the West Indies and East Africa, Paolo Cascone is an AA-trained architect with a Ph.D. at the intersection of environmental engineering and sustainable architecture. He is the founding director of CODESIGNLAB and Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Environmental Design at the University of Westminster in London, where he is also leading research on eco-digital construction and off-grid housing solutions. His work on ecological design and performative architecture has been exhibited and published widely. Paolo is the scientific director of the African Fabbers project recently displayed at the Italian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale of Architecture (May 2021).

ARCHIVES OF MEMORY

The MIAW – Milan International Architecture Workshop – is the international intensive programme at the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering. It provides an international design forum for schools, teachers and students, but it is also an informal platform to discuss issues and share ambitions that education implies. Its aim is to stimulate cross-over thinking between researches and practitioners in the design field, involving different scales and encouraging an interdisciplinary approach towards design problems. Each class has an International Guest Professor of high profile whose activity and interests are related to the different study courses and disciplinary areas characterizing all our school.

In the past editions, 2014 and 2015, MIAW studios worked on a series of abandoned buildings and areas of strategic interest for the municipality of Milan. In the 2016 edition, all the projects focused on the renovation and expansion of Leonardo Polimi Campus, on the base of a selection of sites which, inside or outside the actual boundaries, can be of great interest for the immediate future of our campus.

Last year MIAW tried to produce proposals for new-generation spaces and facilities, which could identify the best conditions for the educational habitats of the immediate future.

Instead, this year’s workshop aims to find the balance between memory and archives. Thanks to the support of the Comune di Milano with its Department of Digital Transformation and Civic Services and the Department of Culture, the workshop had the opportunity of focusing on major cultural realities in Milan (Triennale di Milano, Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, Corriere della Sera), the five ateliers will work on a contemporary idea of a museum capable of interweaving the archival issues. Places of memory conservation in which the exhibition can become a device for a deeper knowledge of the city and of its culture.
